Gents and Cigar Sticks: Dapper Gent of the week is Gary Young, out of Harlem, NY.
There’s a lot of recognition when you hear the word “Harlem.” For starters, you instantly think of Harlem, New York, which it’s synonymous for. Also, you might associate Harlem to the infamous movie, Harlem Knights, and/or the Harlem Globetrotters. Historically, Harlem is known internationally as the “Black Mecca” of the world.
Harlem has always been associated with having a large proportion of African-American residents and businesses, as well as high numbers in crime and poverty, and drug addiction. However, Harlem is currently known now for the huge revamp of social and economic gentrification.
On another note, before the current gentrification of Harlem, there was a period in the 1920s, where the most influential African-Americans, who were activists, artists, entrepreneurs, black playwrights, novelists, and musicians contributed to the Harlem Renaissance, an attempt to decrease racism. These individuals such as Langston Hughes, James Weldon, Zora Neale Hurston, and Billie Holiday, to name a few, were a part of the “New Negro Movement” that was known for fashion, style, music, and the arts.
The fashion of the Harlem Renaissance was used to convey elegance and flamboyancy that was displayed through the great men and women of this era. Therefore, it brings me great pleasure and joy, to present to you today’s “Dapper Gentleman,” Gary Young, from Harlem, NY.
Gary had a very unique and special bond with his uncle, who owned several bars and clubs in the area when Gary was growing up. Gary was first introduced to smoking cigars while in the 9th grade, as a challenge from his uncle, since he was carrying himself in a more adultlike and mature way, per se. His uncle took Gary into his humidor room and told Gary to smoke a cigar, since he thought he was grown-up enough, to hang with the “Big Boys.” And, he also made him take his first sips of beer, to his dismay, these actions were a punishment to put Gary in his place for being out-of-line and out-of-character.
However, as result, this was the very thing that intrigued and grew Gary’s interest in cigars and it stuck with him ever since.
As a child, Gary attended Catholic School, which is how his true reason for becoming accustomed to wearing suits started. In high school, they wore suits, sportscoats, and dress shoes. As Gary became older, he continued to match his attire to this specific dress style having a very large suit collection and cigars.
Although Gary, is not personally connected to the “New Negro Renaissance” or to the spirit of the age, he is one great depiction of the caliber of men in that time period because of his unique blend of traditionalism from his upbringing, he’s innovative, experimental, and intentional about his purpose. For these great characteristics and quality, Gary is our “Dapper Gent” of the week.
Gary likes Bourbons, Wine and Imported beer with his cigars and he sees cigars are being therapeutic for his pastime, it’s a true passion and interest of his.
