Tuesday’s Cigar Tips

As an avid cigar smoker, we all come up with different techniques and routines that work best for us prior to starting our smoking session and during it, and there are a few things we learn along the way. Everyone’s techniques and routines are different, based on your own preference or there can be some similarities. Therefore, to further connect with you and provide you with resources and details about Cigar Etiquette 101, Cigar Topics/News/Stories, and all that good jazz! I’ve created these weekly cigar tips/topics for you to utilize, as a tool.

What’s your favorite style cigar lounge?

As a cigar enthusiast, the pursuit of happiness for us, is to enjoy a great cigar either in the comforts of our home, as I call it, “Patio Chilling,” and/or being in a great cigar lounge with like-minded individuals, to relax, network, and being in the company of friends. One of the benefits about being at a cigar lounge, especially, if you’re a novice, it allows the opportunity for you to learn more about cigars, sample various cigars, and of course, purchase cigars that you can smoke while visiting the lounge and some to take home with you.

If you are a frequent visitor of cigar lounges, then you might be aware that not all lounges are the same, many of the same rules apply such as cigar etiquette, but the commonality is different at each place, which is good, because it differentiates lounges into categories, so it allows a patronage to have options, to me!

Therefore, below based on my experience and observation, I’ve broken cigar lounges down into four categories:

Member Only Lounges

These are the lounges that only permit registered members and their visiting guests. The lounge may simply be an establishment that charges a nominal fee to access or it could be a lounge owned by a private members club or country club. An example of this for a lounge located in my area, Charlotte, NC, which my top two favorite lounges are Tailored Smoke and Gold Leaf.

Public Lounges

These are bonafide cigar lounges where the purpose of being there is to enjoy a fine cigar and mingle with other guests. This type of lounge is open to the public, but will probably have its fair share of regulars, who view themselves as members/family members of the lounge. As the saying goes, “The Turn-up in Real”.…………. LOL! In Charlotte, for me, this is where I attend Cigar Etc. 2. It’s like the infamous T.V. Show “Cheers, where everyone knows your name!”

Cigar Shops with Lounges

This is a very common type of lounge where their primary role is selling cigars and perhaps pipe tobacco. In some of these establishments, they will have a smoking lounge that’s available for their customers to use, sometimes requiring you to pre-book space, but often open for use anytime. A place that puts me in mind of this is Scottish Tobacco that is located in Atlanta, GA.

Establishments with Lounges

This type of lounge isn’t exclusively a cigar lounge, but instead a restaurant, bar or nightclub that has a designated smoking section for cigars. If you’re ever in the Charlotte area, “The Queen City” my city, “The QC,” then if you visit STATS Charlotte Bar and Grill, they have a designated area for this purpose, as well as different cigar vendors set-up for cigar purchases there.

Overall, with the influx of cigar lounges coming into the market, there’s so much to offer and so many different styles of cigar lounges to suit your preference, available. If you want to keep it traditional and chill at a more library-style bar that’s like a piano lounge, where customers come to relax and unwind in a serene and relaxing environment, you can do that too. However, the biggest extent of action at one of these locations is some soft music playing similar to being on an elevator, which is far from the party atmosphere of some cigar lounges.

Picking the right lounge can be very challenging, especially, if you’re away on travels and trying to find the right spot. And, with anything, there’s some risk, and with picking the right cigar lounge, you don’t want to walk into the wrong environment. Therefore, the best tip that I can suggest is to first decide whether you’re looking to relax or socialize. Once you’ve determined which style of lounge, you are after, then you could ask for references from some local tobacconists, friends/family, get opinions from other cigar enthusiasts, and if you’re a part of a cigar group, then you could post a question through social media, and of course, follow all cigar lounges that you are aware of, to get a true visual of the atmosphere and environment.

And with that my friends, “Keep it Smokey!”
