Tuesday’s Cigar Tips

If you’re new to smoking cigars, you might not be too sure, exactly how far you should smoke your cigar to the end “nub.” You might almost feel obligated to complete one per the observation of others, who you might have seen before do so, or based on being in a lounge and feeling pressured to fully smoke it to the end.

To help give clarity, here’s a little fact for you. Handmade, premium cigars can be smoked to the very end, only if you wish, it’s not required by any standards.  However, you can certainly expect some change in flavor in the smoke, when it’s smoke down to that point, the nub.

What happens is that moisture and tars are accumulated near the head of a cigar as you puff. At some moment during the smoke, typically when there is about a third or less of the cigar remaining, the flavor of the cigar can change, and get bitter, or somewhat harsh. We refer to this as the cigar has “turned” or ‘turns.” The flavors are pretty much tainted and it will and can taste significantly different from when you first started smoking it.

For me, I don’t normally smoke each cigar to the end or not much further once I remove the band, because the flavor preference is no longer there that are pleasant, and it does become more bitter and harsh.  In some cases, I have simply continued smoking one to the end, because the profile did not get compromised.

Overall, it’s all based on your preference and your liking. If it’s a go, to keep smoking to the end, then, by all means, do so, but if at any point the taste becomes unpleasant, don’t feel obligated or pressured to continue smoking it. And, certainly, don’t worry about fitting in or standing out, if that’s the case, you shouldn’t be smoking one, to begin with!

Keep it Smokey, My Friends!
